Flights

Bologna has an international airport that has many direct flights, both with low-cost and standard airlines. Alternate airports such as Milano, Treviso and Pisa are within 2-3 hours by train, but do involve multiple bus-train transfers that may cost as much as the money saved by arriving in another city. Rome-Fiumicino and Pisa have train stations at the airport.

From the airport:

A taxi from the airport to the centre should cost between 15 and 20 euros.

The bus (Aerobus) from the airport leaves every 20 minutes and goes to the main train station, it costs 6 euros.

From the train station:

Walking to the department takes about 10-15 minutes.

From the front of the station (Piazza delle Medaglie D’Oro – NOT kiss-and-ride or via de’ Carracci), with the station at your back walk around a 100m to your right

Turn left and cross the street to head down via Amendola.

After three blocks go straight at the roundabout, but remain on the right side and the street continues as via Marconi.

Two blocks later turn right on Largo Caduti del Lavoro, which quickly becomes via Azzo Gardino.

You can also take the 21 or the 36 bus from the train station and get off at Piazza Dei Martiri (2 stops) on via Marconi.

Taking the bus:

Google maps is reliable for directions, but not always for time-schedules.

You can plan your trip on the city by transportation (TPER), by fermata (stop), indirizzo (address) or punto di Interesse (famous spot).

On the bus the ticket costs 1.50 euro and you need exact change to buy the ticket in the machine.

You can buy a 1.30 euro ticket (that needs to be validated on board) where they sell newspapers at the train station, and at a Tabacchi (shops that sell cigarettes and newspapers which are indicated with a blue sign with a white ‘T’).

There you can also buy a citypass which will have 10 rides which can be used by multiple people (validate for each person and ride) and costs 12 euros.

There is a tourist centre in Piazza Maggiore where you can get paper maps and information about underground tours of the city.
