At the division SUPRA, which is part of Institute of Technical Physics at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology we are focused on applications of high temperature superconductors (HTS). In this talk I will give a brief overview on topics and projects which are carried out by SUPRA and the recent results achieved. 
     

On the international market there are several companies producing coated conductor (CC) material by quite different methods with different performances. At SUPRA we are focusing on application relevant CC material characterization and qualification from microstructural and transport properties point of view. For a couple of applications, these materials needs to be structured by laser into filaments or mechanically punched into Roebel strand geometry for assembling the Roebel cable. Those advanced techniques are developed and optimized for lowering AC losses in CC materials and HTS cables. Beside AC losses such techniques and their preciseness influence in particular the field quality in DC coils. In that talk pros and cons of the CC material for applications in connection to striated CC and Roebel cable will be shown.
    

In particular we are partner of CERN in the EuCARD2 project, specifically future magnets work package, in the frame of which a demonstrator of HTS insert dipole magnet is developed. This is first cable based HTS accelerator type demonstrator coil. We are responsible for producing and conditioning the Roebel cable, optimizing parameters and delivery of medium length cables (>20 m) to CERN and CEA Saclay, where preparation of demonstrator magnets is carried out. Status of the work is reported.

Dr. Shane Koscielniak came to TRIUMF after completing his doctoral degree in physics at Oxford University. He has extensive collaborative experience in Accelerator physics, including being a key player in TRIUMF’s contributions to the Proton Synchotron upgrades for the LHC project at CERN. Since 2008, his primary role at TRIUMF has been as the project manager for the building of the ARIEL electron linear accelerator.

From the 30s to the 50s particle accelerators, built in large laboratories, were devoted to nuclear and subnuclear physics. Since then the accelerators used in basic research have grown larger and larger while, in parallel, smaller accelerators are used in many research fields and applications, like material analysis, material science, biology, medicine, security and archaeology. This seminar focuses on the accelerators applications activities at Spain, in particular two examples of technology transfer for medical applications developed in Spanish R&D labs: hadrontherapy linacs and superconducting compact cyclotrons, are given.

The Isotope Separator and ACcelerator (ISAC) at TRIUMF is one of the world most intense radioactive beam facilities. Initially intended primarily for the study of astrophysically important reaction rates the facility now has programmes covering many areas of both subatomic and material science. One of the unique features within ISAC is the Polariser beamline. Capable of producing highly polarised radioactive beams of many elements this is currently being used for the study of the evolution of the nuclear shell structure and Time reversal violating symmetries as well as a suite of material science experiments that utilise the Beta- detected nuclear magnetic resonance technique. An overview of the facility will be presented along with polarisation techniques and highlights of the physics results produced.

The Front End Test Stand (FETS) under construction at RAL is a demonstrator for front end systems of a future high power proton linac. Possible applications include a linac upgrade for the ISIS spallation neutron source, new future neutron sources, accelerator driven sub-critical systems, a neutrino factory etc. Designed to deliver a 60mA H-minus beam at 3MeV with a 10% duty factor, FETS consists of a high brightness ion source, magnetic low energy beam transport (LEBT), 4-vane 324MHz radio frequency quadrupole, medium energy beam transport (MEBT) containing a high speed beam chopper plus comprehensive diagnostics. The Versatile Electron Linear Accelerator (VELA)

VELA is a high performance, modular injector facility capable of delivering a highly stable, highly customisable, short pulse, high quality electron beam to a series of test enclosures. The new facility will deliver a capability for the cutting edge development and qualification of advanced accelerator systems, enabling industry to expedite their technology development from prototypes to market ready products. In doing so it has the potential to help revolutionise the use of accelerators in priority areas such as healthcare (imaging, radiotherapy development and sterilization) security (cargo scanning), energy (development of components for accelerator driven sub critical reactors), industrial processing (development of machines for polymer crosslinking and rheological modification), environment (water treatment and environmental clean-up) and science as well as opening up further high technology commercial markets. Using particle accelerators to generate electromagnetic radiation has proved to be an invaluable tool for scientific experiments. The latest generation of these ‘light sources’ is the X-ray Free Electron Laser (FEL), which has been demonstrated with outstanding performance characteristics in the USA and Japan, with others in development. Even given these impressive achievements, the potential for FELs is still far greater in terms of optimising the output performance to further the capabilities of the science community.

Part of ASTeC’s future strategy is to develop a next-generation light source test facility to be constructed at Daresbury Laboratory. This new proposed test accelerator will be known as CLARA (Compact Linear Accelerator for Research and Applications). The CLARA project aims to build on the UK’s existing expertise and experimental experience in free electron lasers, to pave the way for a state-of-the-art FEL facility in the UK, while simultaneously contributing to international R&D. The study of the neutrino is the study of physics beyond the Standard Model. Now that θ13 has been measured, the focus of the long-baseline neutrino-oscillation programme is to determine the mass hierarchy and to search for leptonic CP-invariance violation. In parallel, some anomalies in shortbaseline oscillations can be interpreted as hints for sterile neutrinos. I will explain how neutrinos produced in the decay of stored muon beams have the potential to serve the conventional long-baseline programme, provide definitive measurements of short-baseline oscillations and be developed incrementally to deliver the Neutrino Factory, the facility of choice for the study of neutrino oscillations. An exciting first step will be provided by the “nuSTORM” facility; an entry level Neutrino Factory capable of making definitive measurements of neutrino-nucleus cross sections and exquisitely sensitive searches for sterile neutrinos.
