Recently constructed at the University of Huddersfield is the new MIAMI-2 system (Microscope and Ion Accelerator for Materials Investigation). MIAMI-2 is a significant step forward over MIAMI-1, enabling the irradiation of samples in situ in a Hitachi H-9500 transmission electron microscope (TEM) with single or dual ion beams whilst also adding analytical capabilities (EELS and EDX).

Ion Beams

  • Most ion species from H to Au
  • 1 – 20 keV Colutron ion source for running inert gases (H,He etc)
  • 20 – 350 keV NEC ion source capable of running most species up to Au
  • Ion beams can be mixed and incident on the sample at an angle of 18.7° to the electron beam

Hitachi H-9500 TEM

  • Accelerating voltage from 60 – 300 kV
  • Gatan OneView digital camera with 16 megapixels and up to 300 fps video
  • Bruker EDX system (Quantax 400 with XFlash 6T 60 detector)
  • Gatan EELS system (GIF Quantum SE)

Specimen Holders

  • Single-tilt
  • Double-tilt
  • Single-tilt with heating (RT to 1300°C)
  • Double-tilt with heating (RT to 1000°C)‌
  • Double-tilt with cooling (-173 to 100°C)
  • MEMS heating holder (RT to >800°C)
  • Straining
  • Tomography
  • Analytical rotation
