Within the Richard Steinitz Building there is a great collection of rooms and facilities that Music and Music Technology students can make the most of to develop their practical musicianship. These include:

26 individual practice rooms plus

  • One chamber music ensemble and three popular music combo rehearsal rooms
  • Two large piano practice rooms
  • Two percussion practice rooms
  • Organ practice room with single mount three-stop organ
  • Harp practice room
  • Double Bass practice room
  • Extensive instrument collection

An extensive collection of musical instruments, all of which are available for use by undergraduate, postgraduate and research students in Music and Music Technology. These are:

  • over 70 pianos
  • all standard orchestral doubling instruments
  • extensively equipped Percussion Studio, with instruments for most styles of music, and which cover the requirements for the University orchestra, wind band, brass band, new music ensemble, big band, as well as the percussion ensemble. There is also an extensive library of percussion music consisting of solos, tutor books, compilations, ensemble material and recording
  • extensive pop music resources, including drum kits, keyboards and amplifiers.

EARLY MUSIC STUDIO

  • 2-manual French harpsichord, a copy of an original by Pascal Taskin (1764)
  • 1-manual French harpsichord, a copy of an original by Albert Delin (1750)
  • 1-manual Flemish harpsichord, a copy of an original by Moermans (1584)
  • two Baroque violins, Baroque viola, Baroque cello, and a set of Baroque bows
  • viols: two treble, two tenor, two bass
  • recorders: Renaissance consort from descant to great bass; various Baroque recorders
  • crumhorns - a consort
  • cornett & four sackbuts built by Meinl of Germany - one alto, two tenor and one bass
  • Renaissance flute
  • Baroque guitar
  • Renaissance and Baroque lutes
  • Three practice continuo organs

PERCUSSION STUDIO

The equipment in here gives our students the opportunity to practice and perform most styles of music and is extensive enough to cover the percussion requirements for the University orchestra, wind band, brass band, new music ensemble, big band, as well as the percussion ensemble. We also have an extensive library of percussion music consisting of solos, tutor books, compilations, ensemble material and recording.
