The turbocharger is a key component in the internal combustion engine that enables designers to reduce emissions, improve fuel efficiency and increase performance. With the rapid growth of this industry, the Turbocharger Research Group (TRG) has been established at the University of Huddersfield to conduct research and develop training to support companies at the forefront of this world-leading technology.

The Institute brings together experienced professionals who have spent a significant amount of time working in the turbocharger and engine industries throughout the world. This gives us an unparalleled and unique insight into the field.

Using this experience, we have developed a world-class short course based on industrial requirements to provide the knowledge and skills required to support this fast moving technology.

Course Overview

This course aims to introduce the student to the principles of turbocharging and the interaction between the combustion process of the internal combustion engine and the turbocharger system. The course should provide an initial understanding of the construction and function of the compressor and turbine stages, and the impact of turbocharging on engine performance, emissions and fuel economy.

Career Progression

This course is intended to extend the knowledge, skills and ability of an Honours degree graduate in preparation to take senior technical and managerial roles within turbocharger, engine and vehicle manufacturing organisations.

Professional Links and Accreditation

This course has been developed alongside the Turbocharger Engineering MSc course and may contribute to an individual’s further learning plan towards chartership by the professional engineering institutions.

Teaching Methodology

This course is delivered via a blended combination of structured lectures, exercises and laboratory sessions. Knowledge and understanding are further enhanced by discussions with industrial and academic experts in the field of Turbocharger Engineering, and students are guided to follow-up reading to broaden their subject knowledge.
