The need for collaborative working in construction projects has been a discussion topic in the industry at least since the Latham Report. After that, new calls for collaboration have been motivated by the sustainability agenda, by the needs of Building Information Modelling and by the needs of lean construction implementation.
However, there are several open questions regarding collaboration: How far has the industry advanced? Can collaborative working simultaneously fulfill the differing needs stemming from sustainability, BIM and lean? Which precisely are the reasons why collaborative working is needed? How best to enable and sustain collaboration? How to avoid failures of collaboration?
In view of such questions, this workshop will focus on the current best practice of collaboration in construction and civil engineering projects. The somewhat differing trajectories of collaborative working in the UK and in the US will both be discussed. After presentations on collaborative working as seen from different angles, a panel will discuss how best to advance collaboration.
